Although, as the The Hollywood Reporter points out, it’s “virtually unheard of for a movie to rocket back to number one more than a month into its run,†that’s just what Frozen did this weekend after spending some time in the number-two spot. Even more impressive, Disney’s latest offering — which last topped the box office over the December 6 weekend — came to the top of the list during particularly horrible weekend weather that caused a predicted drop of up to 45 percent for most pictures across the board. This time around, the animated darling made $20.7 million, bringing its cumulative seven-week total to $297.4 million. For quite a different demographic, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones opened in second place with an $18.5 million total while The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug had a $16 million three-day haul. At the one-month mark, Peter Jackson’s sequel is up to $229.5 million total. Two epic scam films round out the top five with Martin Scorsese’s two-week-old The Wolf Of Wall Street making another $13.4 million and month-old American Hustle adding $13.2 million to its pot. The awards-season favorites have made a cumulative $62.8 million and $88.5 million, respectively.
