The Oprah Winfrey Network announced today that it plans to air a multipart documentary series about University of Missouri football alum Michael Sam, who made history this weekend by becoming the first openly gay player to be drafted into the NFL. The series will follow Sam as he prepares to join the St. Louis Rams next season. “We are honored that Michael is trusting us with his private journey in this moment that has not only made history but will shape it forever,†said Winfrey in a statement, adding that “acceptance and illumination start here.†In the same statement, Sam expressed his excitement about the project, saying: “Like every player out there working to make a team right now, my focus is on playing football to the very best of my ability. I am determined. And if seeing my story helps somebody else accept who they are and to go for their dreams too, that’s great.†Craig Piligian and Amy Rice, who were behind OWN’s Lindsay Lohan docu-series, will produce the show. Hopefully it will have all the emotion and high drama of Lindsay, with a lot less sorting through clothing.
