See Broad City, OITNB Casts at Vulture Festival
A dozen events, one concert, tons of pictures. At this past weekend’s first annual Vulture Festival, the editors and writers of this site took over New York City’s Milk Studios for two days of pop-culture-themed events. The following things happened:
- Erykah Badu DJ’d the opening night party (“I just come up with these songs randomly. Whatever I feel. It’s therapy, it’s fun.”) before doing an a cappella version of her song “Soldiers.”
- A pre-elevator-news Solange opened our Saturday night concert, and M.I.A. closed it out by inviting several dozen fans onstage to do “Paper Planes” with her.
- Mike Birbiglia, Billy Eichner, the ladies of Broad City, and W. Kamau Bell brought Brooklyn’s Bell House down with their comedy night set.
- TV critic Matt Zoller Seitz spoke with Deadwood creator David Milch about the new show he’s writing for HBO.
- Parks and Recreation’s Adam Scott and his wife Naomi talked about their TV opening credit re-creation project — The Greatest Event in Television History. (Scott, on some of the crazy stunts they’ve had to pull off: “If anyone died making one of these, it would be a real shame.”)
- Vulture’s Dave Holmes hosted a panel in which cast members from Orange Is the New Black faced off against cast members from Brooklyn Nine-Nine and New Girl in a pop-culture trivia night. (The Fox team lost. Lamorne Morris, who plays New Girl’s Winston, was not pleased: “I have no grudges against anybody. I just want to let you guys know that next year, or whenever you put this back on, I’m letting the fucking guns out … And as payback, I want to be on the cover of the next issue [of New York Magazine] as restitution for all my hard work here.”)
- Rufus Wainwright sang a Mother’s Day brunch set and spoke with our Julie Klausner about important things, like his Lana Del Rey obsession and his desire to see Mark Ronson naked.
- Cast members from Archer and Bob’s Burgers re-created famous movie scenes, including the “I’ll have what she’s having” moment from When Harry Met Sally.
- Vulture art critic Jerry Saltz took two groups of art fiends on a personal tour of Chelsea galleries.
- Bridges of Madison County composer Jason Robert Brown held a master class on the art of songwriting.
Full videos of many of these events will be posted this week. Until then, click through our photo gallery to see how it all looked.
