Even New York film critics could not resist the earnest pleasures of Boyhood. This afternoon, the film won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards. It’s a turnaround from last year, when the staggeringly cynical American Hustle took home Best Picture. Elsewhere, the winners veered from the pre-established Oscar shortlist: Timothy Spall walked away with Best Actor for Mr. Turner, while Marion Cotillard was honored with Best Actress for her work in two different films: The Immigrant and Two Days, One Night.
