Did you ever wish you had a clock that was actually Ian McKellen? You could say, “Excuse me, Sir Ian, what time is it?†And Ian McKellen would tell you the time. You could have Ian McKellen wake you up for work and remind you when it’s time to get your laundry out of the dryer. It sounds magical, right? Well, it’s actually happening — sort of. Variety reports that McKellen will play Cogsworth, the sassy British clock, in Disney’s upcoming live-action Beauty and the Beast. The film will be directed by Bill Condon, who also directed McKellen to an Oscar nomination in the 1998 pseudo-biopic Gods and Monsters (McKellen plays openly gay filmmaker James Whale during the emotionally truculent twilight of his life), and helmed the upcoming Mr. Holmes, in which McKellen plays an old Sherlock Holmes. The new Beauty and the Beast stars Emma Watson as Beauty, Dan Stevens as the Beast, and Emma Thompson as a teapot.
