Before we watch Zoe Saldana controversially take on the High Priestess of Soul in an upcoming biopic, we’ll get a documentary on the legendary Nina Simone. Directed by Liz Garbus, What Happened, Miss Simone? (which debuted at Sundance) promises an unfiltered look at the life and times of Simone — both the good and the bad — using rare interviews, her songs, and archival footage approved by Simone’s daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly, who served as an executive producer. In the doc’s first trailer, we hear Kelly narrate Simone’s story, warning that her mother “was Nina Simone 24/7 … and that’s where it became a problem.†We’ve got goose bumps. The doc will hit Netflix on June 26.
