Mad Max: Fury Road may have received praise for its visual brilliance and feminist themes, but Pitch Perfect 2 made more money. The Anna Kendrick–led a cappella film pulled in $70.3 million, according to Box Office Mojo, which makes it the best weekend opening for a first-time director, the best opening for a musical, and the second-best opening for a female-directed film, behind only Sam Taylor-Johnson’s Fifty Shades of Grey, which made $85.2 million. Pitch Perfect 2 cost a modest $29 million to produce, while George Miller’s Mad Max cost more than $150 million. Miller’s movie made $44.4 million. On the more super side of the spectrum, Avengers: Age of Ultron made another $38.8 million in its third week, bringing its global gross to approximately $1.143 billion, making it the eighth highest grossing film of all time. Disney now has four of the eight highest grossest films ever, so make of that what you will.
