One of the best things Miley Cyrus has ever done is her “Backyard Sessions,†a series of stripped-down covers showcasing her powerhouse vocals in ways cynical music critics could no longer argue with. Her cover of “Jolene†in particular earned rave reviews. She’s now bringing those sessions back for her Happy Hippie Foundation and will team up with Joan Jett, Ariana Grande, Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace, and Melanie Safka (whose “Look What They’ve Done to My Song, Ma†she previously covered for the sessions) for covers of songs to raise money for LGBT and homeless youth. First up is Joan Jett, whom Cyrus recently inducted into the Rock and Roll of Fame. During her speech, Cyrus referenced her day performing with Jett for the sessions as the moment she “knew that she loved Joan so fucking much.†Here they are doing a rendition of “Different†from Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ Unvarnished that’ll make you wish Cyrus would just ditch Wayne Coyne already and form a supergroup with Jett. We’re ready for it.
