Cate Blanchett’s back in a period piece, so you know what that means: automatic Oscar bait! This time, she’ll play the titular character in Todd Haynes’ Carol, who’s trapped in a dull marriage with Kyle Chandler (we know, unbelievable — but it’s true) in 1950s Manhattan. That is, until she happens upon Rooney Mara at a department store one day, and lots of making eyes at each other and questions about their sexuality ensue. Make that one spot in the Best Actress race already locked in.
