Alan Cumming is headed to Showtime for his very own comedy series. According to Deadline, the network is developing a half-hour dark comedy starring Cumming called Florent, which will be written by Patricia Resnick (Mad Men, Nine to Five) and directed by Rosemary Rodriguez (The Good Wife). Here’s a summary of the series via Deadline:
Inspired by the true story of Morellet, who in the early 80s opened a restaurant in NY’s wild and woolly Meatpacking District, Florent will explore the light and dark of that time, as well as the craziness of a place that become a destination for everyone from NY’s literati, to the neighborhood hookers and hustlers, to the NYPD, to the burgeoning LGBT community — all through the eyes of Florent, played by Alan Cumming with advice from the real restauranteur, himself. Morellet ran his idiosyncratic French diner for 23 years, until his landlord drastically increased his rent.
Florent joins Showtime’s other series currently in development I’m Dying Up Here, an hourlong show about the ‘70s Hollywood comedy club circuit with Jim Carrey onboard as executive producer.
