Over the past few years, Brie Larson has mixed emotionally exhausting indie dramas like Short Term 12 with lighter roles in things like 21 Jump Street and Trainwreck. Room, an adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s novel, is definitely one of the first sort: Larson plays a kidnapped woman held captive in a tiny room for seven years; when she gives birth to a son, she tells him the room is the entire world. Larson’s been earning major Oscar buzz for her work in the film, which looks harrowing enough to make us respectfully refrain from making any Tommy Wiseau or Kimmy Schmidt jokes.
