Creed Director Ryan Coogler’s Fascinating Breakdown of That One-Shot Fight Scene: Watch!

There should be a different kind of Oscar for roles that require an actor to put him- or herself in actual potential danger. Had to climb Everest? That’s a Danger Oscar nomination right there. Get mauled by an actual bear? That’s a nom. Something to think about, Leo. First up for a Dangie (look, I’ll workshop a few nicknames) is Creed star Michael B. Jordan. The film’s director, Ryan Coogler, narrated one of the film’s early fights for the New York Times’ “Anatomy of a Scene,†describing in delightful detail the intricate choreography that goes into the bout, made more difficult by the fact the scene is shot in one continuous take. Coogler compares Jordan’s performance to a monologue. Unlike a monologue, however, if Jordan forgot his lines, he would have had his face absolutely pulverized by a giant man’s fist. Can I start the Danger Academy and get the ball rolling on the Danger Academy Awards? If someone else was able to start an academy, I don’t see why I shouldn’t be able to do the exact same thing. Academies for all!
