Techno-thriller Mr. Robot, one of the most intense shows ever on USA, has started to rake in the awards recognition for its first season, which is good, because creator Sam Esmail is going to need all the support he can get going into the second. Variety reports that Esmail plans to direct all ten episodes of Mr. Robot’s next season, the kind of stupidly daring feat equivalent to building a show around a Christian Slater character who may or may not exist. In doing so, Esmail, who directed three episodes of Mr. Robot’s first season and helped define the series’ striking cinematography in the process, would join the ranks of TV auteur directors like Cary Fukunaga, who directed all of True Detective’s first season, and Steven Soderbergh, who has directed all of The Knick. Neither of those two directors wrote for their own shows, which makes Esmail’s plan all the more impressive, and also all the more ridiculous. Rami Malek recently told us that Mr. Robot’s season 2 was going to be so intense he asked his agent to clear his schedule, and now we get it.
