Amid the controversy over the lack of diversity at the Oscars, many have wondered whether Chris Rock, an outspoken critic of entrenched racism in Hollywood, would step down as the host of the show — well, he won’t. But he will be rewriting his jokes to better tackle that very issue. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Academy Awards producer Reginald Hudlin revealed that, after finishing his monologue a week ago (before news of boycotts started to break), Rock decided to go back and rewrite the script: “As things got a little provocative and exciting, [Rock] said, ‘I’m throwing out the show I wrote and writing a new show.’” Hudlin, one of the people of color involved in the ceremony to whom Spike Lee threw his support in his letter to the AMPAs, also promised that the Academy itself likes Rock’s new angle. “You should expect [#OscarsSoWhite jokes],” Hudlin said. “And, yes, the Academy is ready for him to do that. They’re excited about him doing that. They know that’s what we need. They know that’s what the public wants, and we deliver what the people want.”
