The muse for this year’s Golden Globes appeared to be, of all things, a 2012 Academy Awards attendee. Gwyneth Paltrow’s white caped Tom Ford column is still setting trends, based on the predominant color and silhouette of tonight’s red-carpet looks. (Expect a smug Goop red-carpet report to break in about two weeks.) When attendees weren’t wearing white, cape dresses, or — get this — white cape dresses, they experimented a little.
On the more boundary-pushing end of things, there was Alicia Vikander’s divisive Louis Vuitton apron-dress and Jennifer Lawrence’s geometrically implausible gown. Here’s hoping everyone is saving their real fashion muscle for the Oscars.

Best Haute Milkmaid: Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton Twitter called it an “apron” and a “pinafore,” but the cutout details and miniature paillettes saved her white mousseline dress from seeming twee or costume-y. And kudos to Vikander for her correct pronunciation of the designer’s name. (Looking at you, Steve Carell.)

Most Confusing: Jennifer Lawrence in Dior We're going to need a moment to understand the physics of J.Law's dress. The overlay/cutout/ab-window madness doesn't exactly add up. Cape-iest, Part 1: Saoirse Ronan in Saint Laurent This cape says, "I'm Grecian-inspired and elegant enough for a nominee, but understated enough for one who just turned the legal drinking age." No Norma Desmond vibes here.

Most Pocket-y: Gina Rodriguez; Amy Schumer in Prabal Gurung; Jaimie Alexander The best way to show you haven't let fame go to your head? If you're Amy Schumer, you could try tweeting out goofy texts from friends who forgot you were famous. Or you could show that you're not the kind of primadonna who has a put-upon assistant holding your odds and ends on the red carpet. Pockets — convenient and populist — were built into Schumer's Prabal Gurung gown, and Rodriguez and Alexander also jumped on the pocket train.

Most Mustard: Jennifer Lopez in Giambattista Valli Couture J.Lo called her dress “mustard,” which had us thinking of the deli aisle. But the hue managed to be remarkably glamorous on her Valli gown, with its eye-catching detail and high slit, keeping all things condiment-related far from our minds.

The Force Awakens Tribute: Brie Larson in Calvin Klein Collection The Room star's look earned comparisons to Princess Leia, but not in a good way. It has something to do with the way she wore it — though Larson said she felt like the dress was "hugging" her, she didn't look terribly comfortable. This cutout look belongs on someone who's going to flaunt like her life depends on it.

Most Successfully Goth: Emilia Clarke and Kirsten Dunst, both in Maison Valentino Dunst's dark drama (complete with a plunging neckline that distracted even Ryan Seacrest) was a nice 180º from her midwestern looks on Fargo, while Clarke rocked a high-necked, PG-13 version of the look. Best Boss Vibes: Jill Soloway The Transparent cast had arguably the best time tonight, and the show's creator looked commanding in a slightly askew, just-baggy-enough rose-colored suit and shiny platforms. And she accessorized with Gaby Hoffmann — always a good call.

Best Minimalist: Laverne Cox in Elizabeth Kennedy There were a lot of practically identical white gowns on the red carpet, but Cox proved that sweeping and minimalist is the way to do the (non)color on the red carpet. The sophisticaticated neckline and train bumped this up from the rest of the pack.

Best ’80s Throwback from a ’90s Baby: Zendaya in Marchesa Her maroon tiered dress is a Nouvelle Society reference that would be lost on most people that young, but Zendaya has shown herself to be unafraid to take fashion risks. We're giving her an A+ on fashion history for the night.

Davis's smile shines almost as bright as her sunburst-sequined Marchesa.
