The Best, Worst, and Cape-iest Looks of the Golden Globes

The muse for this year’s Golden Globes appeared to be, of all things, a 2012 Academy Awards attendee. Gwyneth Paltrow’s white caped Tom Ford column is still setting trends, based on the predominant color and silhouette of tonight’s red-carpet looks. (Expect a smug Goop red-carpet report to break in about two weeks.) When attendees weren’t wearing white, cape dresses, or — get this — white cape dresses, they experimented a little.
On the more boundary-pushing end of things, there was Alicia Vikander’s divisive Louis Vuitton apron-dress and Jennifer Lawrence’s geometrically implausible gown. Here’s hoping everyone is saving their real fashion muscle for the Oscars.

Best Haute Milkmaid: Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton Twitter called it an “apron” and a “pinafore,” but the cutout details and miniature paillettes saved her white mousseline dress from seeming twee or costume-y. And kudos to Vikander for her correct pronunciation of the designer’s name. (Looking at you, Steve Carell.)
