In case you weren’t buying into the Top Gun 2 hype, Jerry Bruckheimer wants you to know he just met with Tom Cruise in New Orleans to talk about it. Deadline reports that the producer’s weekend visit was arranged to hash out a potential plot line. An unnamed source also told the site that the long-overdue sequel is “closer now to becoming real than it’s been in 30 years.†The updates come months after a series of major plugs last summer, as well as a very confusing Val Kilmer Facebook post — both of which promised progress on a follow-up fans had heard rumors about for decades. Around the same time, it had also been revealed that Justin Marks (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li) was writing the script, with a definite spot for Maverick and a contemporary take on dogfighting. As Skydance CEO David Ellison said (via Collider):

When you look at the world of dogfighting, what’s interesting about it is that it’s not a world that exists to the same degree when the original movie came out. This world has not been explored. It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we’re actually going to produce so it’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today are all fun things that we’re gonna get to dive into in this movie.

Timeline and other logistical details still haven’t been released, but until that happens you can savor this as a token of genuine momentum:
