Although it was a solemn performance, the above still earned a few hoots and whistles. That might have been because the telecast teased this as a rendition people had never seen or heard before — the big reveal being a string ensemble, which felt kind of odd at first, but then turned out to be kind of perfect. Roll the clip for a new version of “Girl Crush,†propped up against a sonic backdrop that’s a little more classical than the original, but just as agreeable.
