Whit Stillman (Metropolitan) is back with a new movie, featuring some of his favorite white people. Love & Friendship reunites Kate Beckinsale and Chloë Sevigny from Stillman’s The Last Days of Disco, but this time they don big 19th-century hats and capes instead of tube tops. The film is based on Jane Austen’s unpublished early novella “Lady Susan.†It focuses on a widow (Beckinsale) who takes up residence at her in-laws’ estate, and along with her old friend (Sevigny), becomes matchmaker for her daughter. Though the backdrop is something new for Whit, this seems to fit right in with his sensibilities: witty observations about the upper class. Just do you, bro. It’s working.
