Barbra Streisand’s on-again, off-again Gypsy movie dreams might be back. Variety reports the project is now over at STX Entertainment, with Babs in negotiations for the Mama Rose role and Rain Man’s Barry Levinson looking to helm. Streisand would also produce and help Richard LaGravenese with the script, an adaptation of the famous stage musical with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and book by Arthur Laurents. “It’s Barbra Streisand doing one more, if not the last, movie musical of her career,†STX chairman Adam Fogelson told the trade, noting he’s pumped about the talent “clamoring to work with her on one of the most famous and satisfying musicals ever.†No word yet on if that means Lady Gaga could still appear as Louise, but hope accordingly.
