If they gave out Academy Awards for exemplary levels of sass, maybe more people would watch the telecast. Oh, and also Gary Oldman would win. In an interview with Yahoo, the star of the upcoming film Criminal expressed his befuddlement that Spotlight could be this year’s, nay, any year’s Best Picture. He compared Spotlight to 2011’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, for which he snagged a Best Actor nom. “There’s a sort of pedigree that [Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy] had, I’d like to think, worthy of such an honor. Where so many you see, you kind of go, ‘Really? They won an Oscar for that?’†Oldman said. “If you think of some of the movies that have been nominated over the years for Best Picture, Gone With the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, and then you look at Spotlight, and you kind of go, Best Picture? I enjoyed it but, you know, sometimes it gets a little … I just scratch my head in wonder.†Ooooo, that’s the Gary in him. You can take a man with the first name Gary to the upper echelon of cinematic achievement, but he’ll still fight you bare-knuckled and sweaty in the parking lot if you steal his spot, Gary-style.
