AMC is about to reveal to mainstream audiences what geeks have long known to be true: The history of the American comics industry is just as wild as the adventures of the superheroes it has produced. The network has greenlit a six-part documentary series with the working title Heroes and Villains: The History of Comic Books. It’s slated to premiere in 2017 and will be executive produced by The Walking Dead producers Robert Kirkman and David Alpert. Kirkman is no stranger to comics: He had a long career in the medium prior to AMC’s decision to pick up a TV adaptation of his Walking Dead comic. Between this, the two Walking Dead series, and the upcoming Preacher, AMC is emerging as cable’s premier provider of comics-based entertainment. And hey, as long as the triumphs and controversies of Marvel whiz Stan Lee are included, the series should have more than enough high drama.
