Sadly, our dreams of having Ava DuVernay direct Lupita Nyong’o in a sci-fi thriller have been put on ice: DuVernay has dropped out of DreamWorks’ Intelligent Life, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She was first rumored to have signed on to the film, which is co-written by Jurassic World’s Colin Trevorrow, back in February. But, alas, scheduling conflicts are reportedly to blame for yet another DuVernay-less blockbuster. She previously declined to direct Marvel’s Black Panther, but still has Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time; her show for Oprah’s OWN network; the HBO movie The Battle of Versailles; and a Hurricane Katrina movie with David Oyelowo still on her plate, so this alien movie will just have to take a backseat. (But hey, if James Cameron can do it.) Don’t worry, there are no hard feelings between DuVernay and Trevorrow. The two exchanged warm and fuzzies on Twitter last night, hinting that there’s still time for them to collaborate someday when DuVernay isn’t committed to all the projects.
