If you’ll recall, Fox put out a movie about superhero group the Fantastic Four last year. It was not what you’d call a success, garnering a 9 percent Rotten Tomatoes score and less than $170 million in box-office receipts. There had been a second installment planned, but it was quietly taken off Fox’s schedule after the bombing commenced. But don’t count that fearsome foursome out just yet! Simon Kinberg, the film’s producer and co-writer, says he’s hoping to get the go-ahead for a sequel.
“We want to make another Fantastic Four movie,†Kinberg told Den of Geek. “We’ll try to be truer to the essence of the tone of Fantastic Four [the comic] … which is a brighter, funnier, more optimistic tone. I think we tried to make a darker Fantastic Four movie, which seemed like a radical idea, but we were kind of messing with the DNA of the actual comic instead of trusting the DNA of the comic.â€
That said, he was remarkably frank about last year’s outing. “We didn’t make a good movie,†he said, “and the world voted, and I think they probably voted correctly. And you can’t make a good movie every time out — not everybody does. We actually have a pretty good batting average, all things considered. But I think we made many mistakes when we made that movie — mistakes that we learned from and we wouldn’t repeat.†Hey, as long as you keep Kate Mara’s reshoots wig, we’ll be happy.
