Maroon 5 are the latest act to join the boycott against North Carolina’s discriminatory HB 2 “Bathroom Bill.†The band announced on Friday that their scheduled shows in Charlotte and Raleigh have been canceled. In a statement, they said it was the “morally right†thing to do: “We have announced that we will be canceling our upcoming shows in Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina because of the recent passage of the HB2 legislation. This was a difficult decision for us to make as a band. We don’t want to penalize our fans in North Carolina by not performing for them, but in the end it comes down to what we feel is morally right.†They’re one of several musicians refusing to play in North Carolina, including Bruce Springsteen, Nick Jonas, Demi Lovato, and more. Beyoncé recently went ahead with her show in North Carolina, but subsequently denounced the law. In possibly the most radical statement so far, Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace burned her birth certificate onstage in NC earlier this week.
