A grizzled ex-military man has a dark past, and he keeps getting himself into dangerous situations. Then, he takes up theater. That’s the plot of HBO’s Barry, which stars Bill Hader as an ex-Marine turned hit man, who travels to Los Angeles to kill someone and then ends up “finding an accepting community in a group of eager hopefuls within the L.A. theater scene.†Hmm, sounds a lot like Lethal Weapon to us, especially if you made the leads hit men turned actors instead of cops and replaced Danny Glover with the ephemeral concept of “humor.†Henry Winkler, Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg, Anthony Carrigan, and Glenn Fleshler all co-star in Barry, which was co-written by Hader and Alec Berg (Silicon Valley). The series is the first pick-up by Casey Bloys, HBO’s new programming president, who is certainly not too old for this shtick.
