Melissa Etheridge has released a new song to honor the victims of the Orlando gay-club shooting. Etheridge told Rolling Stone that she wrote “Pulse,†named after the venue at which the massacre occurred, because she felt “called to speak; to do what musicians do.†“We want to try to make sense. We want to try to heal. We want to bring some meaning, some purpose,†the singer explained. Etheridge named the song “Pulse†not just because it was the site of the tragedy, but because, “You just start thinking about your own pulse. You come up with: ‘Everybody’s got a pulse/ Love will always win because underneath the skin, everybody’s got a pulse.’†She explained: “It’s the way I’ve always felt about the gay movement, the gay issue. Here we are — people who are loving; we are fighting for who we want to love.†Etheridge plans to donate the proceeds from “Pulse†to an LGBT charity. Listen to her tribute below.
