Back in 2013, soul singer Sharon Jones was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, forcing a delay on the release her fifth album with the Dap-Kings, Give the People What They Want. Now comes a documentary, Miss Sharon Jones!, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Barbara Kopple, who followed Jones throughout her treatment and subsequent comeback. The film received rave reviews when it played the Toronto Film Festival last year, where Jones revealed that her cancer had returned. “I’m going to do what I have to do,†she told the crowd after one screening. “I’m going to sing.†Miss Sharon Jones! opens July 29 in New York and August 5 in Los Angeles, expanding nationally from there.
