In case you didn’t realize that Hamilton had an advantage going into this year’s Tonys, the cast’s spot was prefaced by an introduction from Barack and Michelle Obama. Compared to the grand introduction from two of the most powerful people in the world, the performance was relatively straightforward: a one-two punch of “History Has Its Eyes on You†and “Yorktown.†Following the massacre in Orlando earlier today, the cast made the decision to drop the muskets from their performance, opting instead to pose with invisible weapons, a decision that only seems to underline American history’s complicated relationship with violence.
