During VH1’s 2016 Hip Hop Honors on Monday, many paid tribute to some of the genre’s most influential and enduring female artists — including First Lady Michelle Obama. Missy Elliot and Queen Latifah were among the legends being honored, and they both hold a special place in Obama’s heart, thanks to their efforts in support of the White House’s “Let Girls Learn†initiative, which brings education to young girls in underserved communities around the world. “I’m so proud of the two of you,†Obama said in a pre-taped video, “because through your music and your activism — including your support of our ‘Let Girls Learn’ initiative — you all are empowering young women around the world to believe in themselves and fulfill their boundless promise.†She then added: “I’m so grateful to you for your passion and your contributions to our world and I can’t wait to see everything you’ll continue to achieve in the years ahead.â€
