Television continues to take a page out of the film industry’s reboot playbook. Today MGM TV ordered a ten-episode series based on the 1995 movie Get Shorty (which was itself based on the 1990 novel), Deadline reports. In the movie, John Travolta played Chili Palmer, a mob collector who goes to Las Vegas to chase down a debt owed to his boss, but ends up pitching his mark a screenplay in the process. For the show, it’s being reported that Chris O’Dowd will play Miles Daley, an enforcer working for a crime ring in Nevada, who decides to go legit by making movies. O’Dowd’s Daley connects with a has-been Hollywood type named Rick (played by Ray Romano, essentially in the role of Gene Hackman’s Harry Zimm) who makes low-budget movies and becomes Daley’s partner and entertainment-industry guru. Naturally, though, Daley brings the crime with him into his new life, and misadventures ensue in what is being billed as a “dark comedy.†Guess this leaves the door wide open for a Be Cool–style second season.
