S. Craig Zahler, the writer and director of last year’s excellent indie Old West cannibal thriller Bone Tomahawk, is working on his next project, and Dexter’s Jennifer Carpenter has just come onboard to play opposite Vince Vaughn. Zahler is pulling double duty again for the original story, called Brawl in Cell Block 99, about a former boxer named Bradley who turns to a life of crime after he loses his day job and his marriage. But being a drug courier doesn’t work out so well for Bradley, and he gets tossed into a prison where, according to Deadline, “his enemies force him to commit acts of violence that turn the place into a savage battleground.†Vaughn tried to make serious happen with True Detective season two, but pretty much everyone got lost in Nic Pizzolatto’s theater of the mind on that one. And with his formidable stature, the actor could convincingly pull off a washed-up fighter. For her part, Carpenter has shown promise in the high-intensity genre with movies like Quarantine and The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Expect all parties involved to go hardcore for Zahler.
