As David O. Russell shops around his idea for a premium scripted drama that has major movie stars attached, Nic Pizzolatto looks to be making good on the deal he already has in place with HBO, as Variety reports that the man behind True Detective is developing a series with Robert Downey Jr. Pizzolatto would write the starring vehicle for Downey Jr. with both men onboard to produce, and while there aren’t any firm plot details yet, Variety heard “insiders†saying that the show could be based around a Perry Mason reboot that Downey Jr. started working on as a feature-film project for Warner Bros. back in 2011. After The Judge landed poorly at the box office, the Perry Mason project lost momentum, but now it looks like RDJ could be plotting his return to the small screen with the serial-legal-drama premise in hand. HBO signed a deal through 2018 with Pizzolatto when it picked up his first season of True Detective back in 2014. The second season wasn’t nearly as well-received as the first, but the network hasn’t ruled out a third go at the cerebral crime anthology in the future. And according to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO programming president Casey Bloys said Pizzolatto was “busy working on some other projects†when he was asked about the return of Detective, possibly indicating that this nascent RDJ collaboration is what’s keeping him occupied. No matter what the content is, the fast-talking Downey Jr. should have a lot of fun chewing on Pizzolatto’s famously dense dialogue.
