Steven Soderbergh is enjoying the best retirement in possibly the whole history of Hollywood. Since making his “final†feature film in 2013, the tight psychological thriller Side Effects, the filmmaker has produced four movies and three TV shows. He also directed the HBO movie Behind the Candelabra as well as all 20 episodes of The Knick (one of the shows he created and produced). Considering he’s lost zero percent of his mojo, it’s no surprise that Soderbergh’s latest in-retirement effort, a heist film called Logan Lucky, has drawn big names like Daniel Craig, Hilary Swank, Channing Tatum, Seth MacFarlane, Adam Driver, and, sure, Katherine Heigl. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Sebastian Stan will lend his talents to the film as well. While he’s on a hiatus from playing The Winter Soldier, Stan will take the role of a NASCAR driver who’s racked up three Sprint Cup titles, and who is returning to the track after taking some time off. Because Soderbergh likes to keep us guessing, the plot of Lucky will be set against a NASCAR backdrop, with official co-operation from the racing body, and focus on a pair of brothers and a “would-be heist†at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina. Zane Stoddard of NASCAR, who is also an executive producer on the film described the movie as a “big-hearted, fun story†and said the race track will serve a purpose “much like the Bellagio in Steven’s Ocean’s Eleven.â€
