Matthew McConaughey and Gus Van Sant’s The Sea of Trees opened to an *insert synonym for a large body of water* of boos at Cannes this year, but distributor A24 isn’t letting on to any of that in this dreamy trailer, not that it’s letting on to much of anything. You wouldn’t know from the mostly abstract footage here, but the film follows McConaughey’s trip to Japan’s Aokigahara (nicknamed “suicideâ€) forest where he meets Ken Watanabe and starts to describe his past with Naomi Watts. Of course, some booed Cannes films are pretty good, so perhaps things will be alright for McConaughey, as they tend to be.
