Movies about poets are few and far between these days, but A Quiet Passion is here to assert its literary dominance as awards season begins picking up steam. Starring Cynthia Nixon as the famed poet Emily Dickinson, the film follows Dickinson throughout the highs and lows of her life before her premature death at the age of 55, in 1886. (Which, by then, shockingly only seven out of her hundreds of poems were published.) By exploring the close relationships Dickinson had with her friends and family, as well as her notoriously reclusive lifestyle, the movie homes in on why Dickinson became so gifted with language and was fascinated with ideas of love and mortality. The Terence Davies–directed film — which also stars Emma Bell and Keith Carradine — will screen at the Toronto Film Festival later this year. Get that EGOT, Cynthia.
