Since her break into the mainstream last year with Selma, Ava DuVernay has kept herself busy on a variety of intriguing projects, from Queen Sugar on OWN to Disney’s upcoming A Wrinkle in Time adaptation. Now, we have the first trailer for her Netflix documentary The 13th, which digs into America’s dark and dirty relationship with mass incarceration. The title refers to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which says that slavery and involuntary servitude are illegal except in the form of incarceration for punishment of a crime. The movie explores the effects of mass imprisonment on black communities and the role it has played in shaping black identity in the United States. The 13th will make its debut as the opening-night selection at the New York Film Festival, a first for a nonfiction feature.
