Forgive us, father, for we have sinned thinking about Paul Schrader’s new church drama, First Reformed. Starring Ethan Hawke as an ex-military-chaplain who’s “tortured by the loss of a son he encouraged to enlist in the armed forces†and Amanda Seyfried as a young, grieving widow parishioner, his character soon uncovers “hidden secrets of his church’s complicity with unscrupulous corporations.†Schrader will be directing the project, for which he had been writing the script for “almost 50 years.†Between this and Paolo Sorrentino’s The Young Pope, it’s a very good year for sexy religious dramas and institutional intrigue.
