One of the best things about emotionally fraught films centered on lesbian romance is their tendency to be given single-name titles that are at once vague and filled with subtext. They’re simple words that imply danger, taboo, loss, and even blunt force trauma, like Concussion, Freeheld, Carol, Pariah, and Circumstance. The tradition of naming lesbian dramas with scrapped L Word episode titles is going strong in 2016, too, as Ellen Page and Kate Mara recently signed up to play forbidden lovers in Mercy, and now the double Rachel score of Weisz and McAdams will star opposite one another in Disobedience, according to Variety. The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Naomi Alderman, which follows a woman (Weisz) who returns to her Orthodox Jewish home after the death of her father and throws the whole community into a tailspin when she “rekindles a repressed love with her best friend†(played by McAdams), who happens to be married to the cousin of Weisz’s character. If we’re lucky, Mercy and Disobedience will come out on the same weekend some time next year and you can just buy tickets to both and soak your jacket in tears over the course of a double feature. Then, maybe one day, we can get some A-list actors to sign up for a movie in which lesbians aren’t being ripped apart by the society around them. One day.
