Today in Beyoncé might actually be human, we have Bruno Mars spilling the beans on her surprisingly relatable pregame ritual. In a new Rolling Stone profile, Mars has revealed that while the rest of America was busy gorging themselves on beer and bar food in preparation for this year’s Super Bowl, guess what, so was Beyoncé. You would think being seasoned halftime performers at this thing would mean utter chill, but, nope, both Beyoncé and Bruno were nervous wrecks — only, Bey took out her stress on a bag of Cheetos. “Me and Beyoncé were both working on our diets, stressing out,†Mars says. “Then the day before, we’re watching playback backstage, and she’s eating a bag of Cheetos. I’m like, ‘That’s what you’re doing?’ … She’s like, ‘There’s nothing more we can do these last two days. It’s gonna be what it’s gonna be. So I’m gonna enjoy this bag of Cheetos.’†Truer words have never been spoken.
Perhaps adding to the stress was the fact that neither of them really wanted to be there in the first place. Mars says he initially turned down Chris Martin’s invitation to join Coldplay onstage because he “felt like I’d just done it†and group performances usually turn out stale. Unwilling to deprive “that gift to the world†of Beyoncé, Coldplay, and Bruno Mars all bopping to “Uptown Funk,†however, Martin brought in the big guns to sway him: According to the profile, “[Mars] told Martin to talk to Beyoncé and see what she thought. Martin’s response: ‘Let’s talk to her right now!†He took out his phone and shot a video of himself and Mars, then texted it to Beyoncé. To Mars’s surprise, she was in.†So to no one’s surprise, yes, their halftime performance was about as forced as it looked.
