Tonight marks the premiere of the long-gestating A&E docuseries Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath. The series, which is based on Remini’s memoir about her time in and escape from Scientology, has been hotly contested by the church, which believes Remini is doing it just for the money and notoriety. (She recently brought a lawsuit against the church for defamation and is seeking $1.5 million in damages.) Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter today, Remini disputed the church’s take and added a few tidbits of information on its interference in her life over the years. Of these, the most interesting was the claim that Remini, while starring in the CBS series King of Queens, was once pressured by church higher-ups and influencers — including Tom Cruise — to try to nix a 60 Minutes story about Scientology. Remini reportedly placed a call to CBS head Les Moonves with that goal. Moonves didn’t budge, of course, and Remini allegedly took a lot of flak for it. “I’m just a fucking actress on television,†she remembers thinking. “I can’t demand that my boss take a fucking report off the air.†To find out what an actress on television can actually do, you’ll have to watch A&E tonight.
