Vice-President-Elect Mike Pence, a man who has vocally supported Donald Trump’s proposal to build a border wall between Mexico and the United States and who has also advocated for funding for gay-conversion therapy, went to see a performance of Hamilton tonight on Broadway. There he got booed by a significant number of his fellow audience members before being addressed at curtain call by the show’s Aaron Burr, Brandon Victor Dixon (you can read Dixon’s statement, which was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, here). It’s interesting that Pence — who has said that Congress “should oppose any effort to put gay and lesbian relationships on an equal legal status with heterosexual marriage,” and opposes efforts to protect the LGBTQ community with anti-discrimination laws, would patronize a musical that has a cast filled with queer people and people of color. We can only hope that Pence’s night ended with a lecture from playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda on the vital role that immigrants play in the United States.
