Brian Tyree Henry had just wrapped production on the first season of Atlanta — Donald Glover’s new FX show, and our pick for the best show this year, in which Henry plays rapper Paper Boi — when he got the news that his mother had died in a car crash in Maryland. “We were very close spiritually,†Henry told Vulture earlier this year, remembering the emotional aftermath after he received news of the tragedy. The actor has found a way to keep his mother’s memory close to him: her jewelry.

At last night’s Vulture Awards Season Party at the Sunset Tower Hotel in Los Angeles, Henry wore a dark-blue Hugo Boss suit accessorized with a couple of long necklaces, one rosary-like chain of black beads, and another silver chain with a floating crystal the color of aquamarine. “This is my mother’s jewelry,†he told Vulture. “I lost my mother this year, so I went through her jewelry box and grabbed everything that she had. I was like, I will wear her anywhere I go, because all of this greatness and success that’s happening is all because of her, so I want to make sure I represent her wherever I go.†You’re doing mom proud.
