Heaven knows that Carrie Fisher had a complicated relationship with her Star Wars counterpart Leia Organa. But heaven also knows that a lifetime of ambiguous feelings couldn’t keep Fisher away from a good bit. All of which brings us to the late star’s unique brand of hospitality, as recalled by one-time house guest James Blunt, who scored an extended stay at Fisher’s while making his first album. In an interview with The Sunday Times, Blunt remembers: “She put a cardboard cutout of herself as Leia outside my room, with her date of birth and date of death on her forehead.†Blunt was sparked to the memory by Fisher’s recent death, saying, “I’m trying to remember what the date was, because it was around now — and I remember thinking it was too soon.†And knowing what we do of Fisher, it’s no surprise that the stay was memorable for more than the potential prophesying, as Blunt revealed that the title of that first album, Back to Bedlam, was a testament to his time “in a madhouse with her.†Indeed, he and Fisher stayed close long after Blunt found new dwellings. Blunt remembers Fisher as his “American mother,†and she even became godmother to his son. Carrie Fisher as guardian and protector? Yeah, sounds about right.
