Here is some very good and encouraging news. According to The Hollywood Reporter, people’s champion Constance Wu is in talks to lead the cast of Crazy Rich Asians, the high-profile adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s novel of the same name. The movie, which will be directed by Jon M. Chu, will follow an American-born Chinese economics professor named Rachel Chu, who goes to a wedding in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick, and learns along the way that he is from an obscenely wealthy family that lives in the city. So, going to her boyfriend’s best friend’s wedding turns into Rachel fielding scores of high-class women who want to take her place at Nick’s side. Amid so much talk of whitewashing in Hollywood lately, Crazy Rich Asians stands far out from the pack by featuring an all-Asian cast to tell a story that revolves around Asian characters. (Get out!) THR says that Chu’s film hasn’t actually been given the official green light yet, but cites sources who say it’s “on the development fast-track.†If Warner Bros. has the good sense to bring on Wu, they’re off to a very good start with this movie.
