Nickelback is a near-universally derided outfit, so much so that even Nickelback knows that mocking Nickelback is passé. But, as with all things that are widely bemoaned, the band does have a giant fan base somewhere (in Avril Lavigne’s words, “#TheJokeIsOld #NickelbackHasSoldOver50MillionAlbumsâ€), and one of its members just came clean. Namely, Father John Misty, populism-fearing individualist that he is, has Nickelback’s back and then some. He declared, “I ride for Nickelback.â€
The artist swore the thicker-than-blood oath while talking to NME about the suggestion that The Chainsmokers are the “Nickelback of EDM.†He insisted, “I will ride for Nickelback, okay?†rising to the particular defense of Nickelback tune “How You Remind Me,†a “fucking great song.†And no, Father John Misty can’t articulate why he’s gung ho for the Canadian rockers — “the stuff that you like, you can’t say what it is that you like about something†— but he is nevertheless committed to ride or die. “I will ride for Nickelback — I want that on the record. ‘Farmer John Misery — I ride for Nickelback,’†he said. Done and done, sir. Conspicuous lack of offer to ride for The Chainsmokers, though. Hm.
