Viola Davis Finally Won an Oscar for Inventing Acting (and Also for Fences)

Viola Davis, inventor of acting, finally won her Oscar. The Fences star picked up a trophy for playing Rose Maxson, the same role she won a Tony for. “I became an artist, and thank God I did, because we are the only profession who celebrates what it means to live a life,†Davis said in her acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress. “So here’s to August Wilson who exhumed and exalted the ordinary people.†Davis also thanked Fences’ director and star Denzel Washington, who was also nominated for Best Actor. For those keeping track at home: Davis, the most nominated black actress in Oscars history, is now one Grammy away from an EGOT.
