The Fences star picked up a trophy for playing Rose Maxson, the same role she won a Tony for. “I became an artist, and thank God I did, because we are the only profession who celebrates what it means to live a life,†Davis said in her acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress. “So here’s to August Wilson who exhumed and exalted the ordinary people.†Davis also thanked Fences’ director and star Denzel Washington, who was also nominated for Best Actor.
