Perhaps in an attempt to somehow subvert the original film’s underlying Gaslighting! On The High Seas! premise, or just because it’s 2017 and we’re mixing it up, Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez will reportedly star in a gender-swap remake of Overboard. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell starred in the original 1987 Garry Marshall comedy. According to Variety, Derbez — the writer and lead of 2013’s Instructions Not Included, the most successful Spanish-language film to ever open in the United States, as well as the upcoming comedy How to Be A Latin Lover — will star as a Mexican playboy who develops amnesia after toppling from his yacht. Anna Faris will assume the movie’s Kurt Russell role, this time conceived as a single mother who convinces a discombobulated Derbez he is actually her husband. It remains to be seen if and how a gender switcheroo will effect the film, but no matter the gender of the characters, there’s still one important part of the classic that remains unchanged: superrich people falling off boats and getting serious head injuries.
