Kellyanne Conway Compares Her ‘Alternative Facts’ Moment to the Oscars’ Best Picture Mix-up

Kellyanne Conway has continued her defense of on-air gaffes, this time invoking the Oscars. When CBS News’ Norah O’Donnell pressed the Trump adviser on her tactic of defending the administration’s falsehoods (in this case, about the crowd size at the inauguration) with the phrase “alternative facts,†Conway pointed to the Oscars’ Best Picture mix-up as proof that everybody makes mistakes. “It was alternative information and additional facts, and that got conflated. Respectfully, Norah, I see mistakes on TV every single day, and people just brush them off,†Conway said. “Everybody thinks it’s just so funny that the wrong movie was heralded as the winner of the Oscars. You say, ‘Oh, well, that’s just all in good fun. Things happen.’ Well, things happen to everyone.†(As the two PricewaterhouseCoopers accountants who are now barred from future ceremonies, and who received death threats, can confirm, the Best Picture mix-up was definitely not in good fun.) Watch Conway point to the Oscars to defend her blunder at the 5:15 mark.
