Most pop songs can be traced back to Michael Jackson to some degree if you listen closely, and âAndromeda,â Gorillazâs shimmering, space-age dance track with D.R.A.M., from the bandâs upcoming album, is no exception. Though, as Damon Albarn readily admits, he mightâve taken a bit more creative license with the King of Popâs influence than he wants anyone to notice: Breaking down âAndromedaâ on the Song Exploder podcast, he says the song was conceived from a conversation about âtwo of the greatest â80s pop songs,â Michael Jacksonâs âBillie Jeanâ and Hall & Oatesâs âI Canât Go for That.â
Albarn attempted to âchemically channel the greatness of those into our own music,â with little subtlety â he originally titled the record âI Canât Go for Billie Jean.â But because you canât just go naming your songs after MJ classics, that didnât last, and instead itâs now named after a nightclub. Albarn now adds this cheeky disclaimer, should anyone detect similarities: âI want to emphasize that the eventual outcome bears no resemblance and any resemblance is purely fictitious.â In other words, donât come for Albarnâs head. Listen to him talk about who almost sang lead vocals on the song (plus, hear that demo) and how his partnerâs dying mother, Ethel, was the songâs true inspiration, below.
