The annual MCC Theater Miscast Gala does two things: Raise money, and more importantly, add fuel to your musical-theater YouTube wormholes. Each year, the gala lets talented people who can sing and dance better than most others perform numbers that they never would get to perform in an actual show, mostly because they’re just wrong for the part. Because they are talented people, this all goes surprisingly well. The theater has posted most of the videos from Monday night’s event on YouTube, so we won’t inundate you with clips here. But if you’re looking for two highlights from the evening, check out Mandy Gonzalez (currently in Hamilton) performing a song from Dear Evan Hansen in the clip above, and Norbert Leo Butz (a Tony winner for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Catch Me If You Can) giving the world his best Effie White with “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.â€
After the performance, Butz bows in front of the original Effie, Jennifer Holliday, who closed out the evening with La Cage aux Folles’ “I Am What I Am.†MCC hasn’t put that online yet, but you should find it as soon they do, because wow, it was something.
